Blackout- Eugene Dorsey

On Thursday, September 8th 2011 the people of San Diego, Mexico, Arizona, and Orange County experienced a blackout that lasted nearly 14 hours. Reports claim to say that a man in Arizona accidentally cut a power line on one of the substation feeders; while trying to make a repair. When the blackout struck I was at school in the library doing my homework. It kind of came as a shock to me; I didn't really think much of it just though of a mild power outage so I decided to continue working. Ten minutes after the power outage my dad calls me and ask if the power was out at our house but I wasn't sure; he then explained to me power in Coronado was out and that I should go home and check out what the situation was. I get home to realize the powers out and everything's shut off. My dad's girlfriend calls and says their closing the store and shes coming home. Luckily all my homework was already finished and I was able to just chill. Later on that night, before the sun completely set we found out my dad had to stay at work and get all his guest situated and wait for the power to come back on before he could come home. It was a long night in my house. When the sun had partially gonna down and you could tell it was dark a lot of my neighbors were partying in thee street and being loud. Also a lot of people were out barbecuing and cooking there foods so they didn't go bad it all seemed like a lot of chaos. My dad's girlfriend and I bonded for awhile which I thought was really cool and fun to do. I realized that electricity is very important to society. Electronics, appliances, store's, and gas stations all rely on electrical power to get them going. Without power things such as cell phones, tv's, washer machines, refrigerators, and other electronically powered things wouldn't work. I find it sad that we heavily depend on electricity for a lot of things and without it we can't function. This shows that we need another source of energy that is safe and efficient; hopefully to soon be discovered and put into action immediately. Americans should start to slowly back away from their heavy reliance on energy and consider doing other things with their time; this in turn would help to make a difference on the amount of energy consumed per household.
